Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area

Attractions

With mountains covered with golden maple leaves, spectacular suspension bridges and surrounded by wild animals, the Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area is a forest full of charm.

It is more than an hour's drive from Puli and is located behind the Wanda Reservoir. It was originally inhabited by the Atayal and Seediq tribes. Hydroelectric power construction began during the Japanese era and it became a national forest recreation area in 1994.

Aowanda is located between 1,100 and 2,600 meters above sea level and has a rich ecology with native beech, oak, Wushe cherry, and pine forests. It is home to 120 bird species, including the Formosan blue magpie and the Formosan blue magpie. From May, black-winged fireflies quietly appear, and the Formosan long-armed beetles and a large number of butterflies are also worth seeing.

The large tracts of native maple forests on the maple viewing trail and the bald cypress and green maple trees around the visitor center will adorn the park with a riot of colour every autumn. This is the busiest season in Aowanda, but the beauty of the cherry blossoms in spring is just as great. The spectacular "Aowanda Suspension Bridge" connects the beautiful pine forest area. It is 180 meters long and 90 meters high. You can overlook the confluence of the Wanda North and South Rivers. It is also a must-see attraction when visiting Aowanda!
