Exhibition Overview
The Hong Kong Photozine & Photobook Dummy Award 2025 touring exhibition arrives in Taichung for a free public presentation at Green Hotel. Selected from nearly 200 international submissions, the exhibition brings together 29 winning and shortlisted photozines and photobook dummies. Visitors are invited to look beyond individual photographs and discover how sequencing, editing, typography, paper, binding and page design shape a visual story.
Unlike photographs displayed only on a wall, these works are made to be held and read. Turning each page reveals changes in rhythm, scale, silence and emotion. The exhibition welcomes photographers, designers, independent publishers, travellers and anyone curious about visual storytelling. Take time to browse the books, notice how images speak to one another and experience photography through the intimate format of a publication.
The Taichung presentation runs from October 2 to October 12, 2026, in the Green Hotel exhibition area. Admission is free. The programme is organised by the Hong Kong Photobook Festival, with support from SpringBao, Green Hotel, Little Gallery and Lightbox Photo Library.
How to Read a Photozine
A photozine or photobook dummy can be approached at your own pace. Begin with the cover and notice the first expectations created by the title, material and scale. As you turn the pages, pay attention to repeated colours, gestures, locations and visual motifs. A quiet blank page may work like a pause, while a sudden change in image size can shift the mood or emphasise a detail. Text may provide context, but it may also leave space for the reader to form a personal interpretation.
There is no single correct way to experience these publications. You can read from beginning to end, return to a sequence that catches your attention, or compare the different choices made by each artist. Look at the relationship between photographs placed side by side. Consider why one image follows another and how the meaning changes when an image is enlarged, cropped or given an entire spread. The physical act of holding and turning pages is part of the artwork, making the encounter different from viewing photographs on a screen.
A Space for Slow Looking
This touring presentation offers a chance to slow down and spend time with many approaches to photography and publishing in one place. The selected works bring together different subjects, visual languages and methods of storytelling. Some publications may feel documentary, while others may be poetic, personal or experimental. Their design decisions show how a sequence of images can build atmosphere, suggest memory and invite questions without relying on a conventional narrative.
Visitors are encouraged to handle the books with care and allow enough time for each work. You may notice how paper texture changes the appearance of a photograph, how binding affects the way pages open, or how typography creates another layer of rhythm. These details demonstrate that a photobook is not simply a container for pictures. It is a complete form in which photography, editing and physical production come together.
Whether this is your first encounter with independent photography publishing or part of an ongoing interest, the exhibition can be enjoyed without specialist knowledge. Follow your curiosity, begin with the book that attracts you and let each page lead to the next. The free presentation at Green Hotel makes space for both focused viewing and casual discovery during a visit to Taichung.
