According to legend, 250 years ago, a Tsou chief named Abari came here alone to hunt. After returning with a full load, he often brought his tribesmen here. In order to express their gratitude, the tribe named this place after him. In fact, Alishan is composed of 18 high mountains and belongs to the branch of Yushan Mountain Range. It faces the main peak of Yushan across the Tongfu River. Now the new Central Cross-Island Highway has connected Alishan and Yushan Scenic Area. Alishan Forest Recreation Area is 2,216 meters above sea level and is surrounded by high mountains with a cool climate. It is internationally famous for its sunrise, sea of clouds, sunset, forest, and mountain forest railway, which are listed as the five wonders of Alishan. The cultural resources of the Tsou aboriginal people further enhance its tourist appeal.
The Alishan area spans the three vertical distribution zones of Taiwan's forests: hot, warm, and temperate. It is rich in forest resources, especially its internationally renowned cypress trees, which can be seen everywhere while strolling through the forest. Red cypress, Taiwan cypress, Taiwan fir, hemlock and Armand pine are known as the five trees of Alishan. Cryptomeria fortunei is the most successful foreign tree species for artificial afforestation in this area. The lush forests covering the mountains and valleys along the forest railway form a spectacular sight. The cherry blossom season in this area is from mid-March to mid-April every year, when Yoshino cherry blossoms, double cherry blossoms, and mountain cherry blossoms dot the mountains, creating a colorful and beautiful scene. Other flowers such as Rhododendron serrata, Heather, Foxglove, etc. are also blooming. There is also a protected Taiwan Aspidistra Nature Reserve, which is also worth admiring.
Natural landscapes such as Tashan and Sister Pond alpine lakes, as well as precious cultural and historical resources such as museums, Ciyu Temple, and the old train exhibition hall are also worth a visit.
