National Taichung Theater

National Taichung Theater is more than a place for theatrical performances—“it is itself a brilliant performance of opera,” said the architect Toyo Ito when describing his design.

Indeed, the building is an architectural wonder which shows its beauty in every corner and as a whole. Located in Taichung’s 7th Redevelopment Zone, the theater features wavy walls and a water curtain, which turn the building into a piece of flowing melody. The architect bases his design on the concept of “listening.” Grids of various sizes extend among the interconnected “caves” to add a soft rhythm to the building and the layered structure further creates an immense, unobstructed theatrical space. Besides appreciating the “performance” of the architecture, the theaters of different sizes in the building and the sky garden also present distinguishing features. It is worth visiting the building for a feast of art inside out.
